DIY Laptop Screen Replacement

I dropped my laptop when I was in India and unlike the US apartment with soft carpet everywhere, my laptop crashed on a hard tiled floor. The LCD screen was shattered. I waited till I was in the US and once I was here, I opened it up, looked for the part and ordered it on eBay. This is where my mistakes began.

First mistake: Buying on eBay. The sellers have no clue about what they are selling. They "claim" something and "sell" something else. I asked for a K91V5 LCD for Dell whose actual product number is LTN140AT07-D01. What I got was an LTN140AT16-201 which is equivalent to HJ387 in Dell's language. These LCD's are for two different series of machines but they look so similar that you will think one can replace another which leads to my second mistake.

Second mistake: I assumed eBay guy was honest and assumed his part was compatible with mine. Poof, and I burnt my laptop LED driver. Screens went blank and nothing came after that.

LCD replacement is very easy but you have to be very careful with what you buy. Before you buy an LCD, always check if the model numbers match with your current one. The above example shows that two screens can be identical to look at, same type of connector, same dimensions and yet be different!! And stay away from eBay sellers.
